I think DA should change the name of the website in www.wedontcareaboutartandartists.com or WDCAAAA.
today i received a note from Ellen Herbert
"Hello Vito,
Your images have caught our eyes here at the deviantART Stock Collection!
We are a group of professional photo editors hired by deviantART to put together a carefully selected collection of images that represent the broad variety and excellence of photographs on deviantART. You have been chosen!"
wow!! thank you i have been chosen ... by some photo editors ... hired by deviantart (sorry ART, needs caps) ... to tell me that i can give them my work/hobby so they make more money... great!
first of all my name is not Vito
... second of all, i have all my photos free for download so if you want you can just put a link to my profile, thank you..
they continue like this... "We are particularly excited about your images because we want the deviantART collection to be distinctively attractive to the community of designers, editors, art directors and others who rely on stock for their projects. We also think your images will present a terrific example of quality and style to all of the other artists who will want to participate when deviantART launches its own stock offering; for this phase of the project, the collection is invitation only."
wow cool ah? invitation only!! i feel so unique!!!! what ? wait... deviantart (sorry ART) will launch its own stock offering... wow!! how artistic is that ah? im sure every artist would like to participate, especially when they see my images ,because they are attractive to those who rely on stock for their own projects ( that means to those who buy your image then crops it, changes it, adds graphics, shits on it, and never gives credit to the original artist, and did i mention you take 25% on the sales??)
check this out ... "Benefits of this Collection
The deviantART Stock Collection is a curated collection that will be marketed with the deviantART identity so the strength of the deviantART community will benefit you, the artist, in many ways. The collection, even within Fotolia, will be promoted as a collection under the deviantArt brand, which we believe gives the collection added value and is a strong selling point. The agreement is non-exclusive and provides for great royalty rates."
hey!!! those are some benefits or what?? rates... value... selling point ... and wait a minute! the agreement is non-exclusive.... shit! now i have to erase all this journal, because at the end ,they are good guys... they give me 25% for non-exclusive agreement, that means i can shit also on my art without going to jail plus i take some cash!!!
listen... i didnt join DA to make money, and im sure no real artist did.
i use DA to get inspiration from other artists, and to show my own work to inspire others. i also discuss with people about art and technical matters, so i/we get improved.
I DONT WANT DA TO GAIN MONEY FROM MY WORK, BECAUSE IM NOT YOUR FUCKING WORKER OR OFFICIAL
Listen to this idea, if you want to promote art and artists, why dont you make exhibitions, instead of selling stock, and you can keep the 25%, wtf keep 50%. In every major city, pick your favourite artists from each country, and make a few exhibitions with your chosen art, in physical prints, in physical places, so physical people can be there and buy art because they like it, not because they want to use it for toilet paper.
this is how both DA and artists get benefit, and its the healthy way to promote your website (that supposed to be about art) and your members
so FUCK YOU people, and your idea about art

Sometimes I wonder if dA really understands their best artists and their intentions or not... looks like not.
Stock is a great resource for other artists, sure, but you are 100% right - what is the value for the stock provider? It is not saying their work is art, but rather that it is a service. Normally, when people work to make service-related stuff, they get paid and know that is what they are doing. When people are making art, they often will not want it used as a service because it was meant to be ART in and of itself! To assume that all work posted on dA "qualifies" as stock is ballsy and says to the artist they didn't create art that should be presented exactly as the artist intended.
Can you imagine, for example, posting the literary work of Rod Serling in text format and say "Aspiring writers can use these words as stock in their work." That would have not been met well by Rod himself, as he fought any adjustments to his work and viewed it as censorship and destroying his art, his message.
In fact, I can't think of a popular author who would like their work used as stock... so why assume that other artists are ok with it?
Also if i wanted to sell stock photography i would sell stock photography. Do you see that i sell stock photography anywhere in my profile? no...
as an art student you should focus in art, and how to become better, not how to sell and what tags to use
also you should think "why did i fail in other stock websites?"
i joined this community for other reasons, if i wanted to sell stock i would join some stock website, and if they want to turn deviant into a stock photography market, then i will have to join some other community that people are interested in art
I honesty don't care what people use my images for.
I wasn't saying that you should do it I only meant that I was surprised you were so "insulted" by their offer. I was only giving my opinion on the mater.
Art is not only about the work, it's about being able to sell yourself/your work off. Why do you think some mediocre artists get famous after all?
I failed because I am not that good. It's simple. That is why I'm pleased to have gotten a request from DA for my stock. They consider me good enough for them and that is a compliment to me.
I understand. I joined to share my stock with people for them to make art and my stock will remain free to deviantart users. The stock sails are targeting a different group of "stock users".
Suit yourself though. To each their own.
also i wasnt insulted for myself, i just dont understand why instead of doing something so the quality of what is exposed here becomes better, they do something so it gets worse. Im so bored to see everyday kittens and bunnies and boobs in the popular first pages, shot by a mobile phone. The favourite system does not work, it should be changed. Many really talented artists here do not get attention because they dont do "popular" "art". SO why not make a change there? and try to expose better those artists instead of trying to make them do stock crap
and im sorry but if you think you are not that good, but you are happy that someone likes your "not that good" art, its not a healthy thing. But you should come to live in Greece, its the paradise of this.
anyway people make their choices, i just wanted to show the other prespective of things, you dont have to follow my example of course, and you have the right for sure to be happy that they chose you. I would be happy though if they ve said " DA chose you to be exposed in an art gallery among other artists, or DA wants to expose some artists that are amazing in a special category so art lovers can buy their art, only in high quality and resolution pictures"
I am trying to get to be a better artist. I'm a student at the American Academy of Art Chicago. But why beat myself up over my art? I'm glad I can do what I can do and I'm glad someone out there appreciates it. However, I do hope to get better and have my work appreciated as such. I just am not going to complain about what I am today.
Thanks for explaining. I understand what you were getting at now.
